Is Queens the next Brooklyn? Testaccio says yes!
Far flung neighborhoods have finally hit their stride. Great restaurants have been opening up for years in Brooklyn, and Marcus Samuelsson is now venturing into Harlem. But what about Queens? Long a foothold for seekers of authentic Indian and Thai, it’s not exactly been a culinary destination for much else. (I can say this. I grew up in Queens). But Testaccio Ristorante is hoping to change that.
Located in Long Island City (the first stop in Queens), Testaccio is serving some authentic Roman comfort food in a modern space. Chef Ivan Beacco’s kitchen will roll out appetizers ($9-$14) like carciofi alla giudea (a crispy artichoke with black olive tapenade) or classic entrees ($16-$30) like bucatini all’amatriciana (classic Roman spaghetti hollow with guanciale) and gnocchi alla Romana. There are also some pizzas on the menu and desserts ($8) include tiramisu and foccaccia al Nutella.
Alviero Pirani, one of the owners who grew up in the Testaccio neighborhood of Rome, partnered with Carlo and Paul Bordone to open a restaurant that reminded them of Testaccio. Up to 86 people fit into the main dining room in the industrial warehouse space, which is filled with light bulbs, wood paneling, pipes and photos of the Roman district. There’s also a private dining room and chef’s table available.
For now, Testaccio will be open noon to 11:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, until midnight Friday and Saturday and 11 p.m. on Sunday. Enjoy!
Testaccio is located at 47-30 Vernon Boulevard in Long Island City, 718-937-2900, www.testacciony.com.
